Encounters with Human Rights Defenders

Christopher Campbell-Duruflé

Lawyer and Doctoral Candidate in International Law, Canada

Unlike many others, I have never been persecuted for my ethnic origin, my convictions or my profession. I take stock of this fundamental underlying injustice, based in large part on my nationality. Up to this date, because of this nationality, I have not been intimidated and my life has never been directly threatened. I have decided to use this privilege to accompany vulnerable individuals and communities in the defense of their fundamental rights. For me, this profession involves much more than legal research, trial advocacy or elaborate judgments. It is about letting myself filled with a deep feeling of humanity, that ties me in a very profound way to any stranger walking in any street of the world.
